Yacoub and his father visit. Mariam rushes in to tell Moussa and Laila, then runs back out to lead the father and son into the front room. Mariam nervously tries to get a meal prepared and helps her father dress.

Moussa sits and talks with Yacoub’s father about a marriage arrangement. Later, Mariam finishes the story, telling Rivka that everyone agreed to a wedding in three months. Mariam worries about her parents and how to be a wife to Yacoub. Rivka tries to tell her that they will each grow as they submit to God.

She points to the lamps they’re cleaning and says they all have the same purpose: to shine. But they each have a different effect. Some are soft, some are bright, some are pretty. She says God thinks of us as lamps. We are to shine as God made us to shine.

Rivka says she knows women that have had to shine in the darkest hours. They had to rely on God to fill them so He could shine through them. Mariam wonders if Rivka thinks life would be easier if she hadn’t been married. Rivka says she thinks her life would be difficult in different ways. She thinks God made her specifically to be who she is and that wouldn’t change.

Mariam tells her that some look down on the girls who aren’t married. Rivka replies that a girl’s worth doesn’t rely on her marriage status. Instead, she should live to serve God with her gifts and talents. That’s where worth is found.

She tells the parable of a master who gave each of his servants money before going on a journey. When he returned, each servant had doubled the money, except one. He scolded that servant for not investing the treasure given to him.

Rivka assures Mariam that each person has been given talents and treasure by God. We should be investing what He’s given to us. Rivka gives Mariam one of the lamps as a gift to remind her that she shines with God’s light.

Daliyah joins them to ask Rivka to help her mother. As they walk, Mariam shares about her engagement and uses everything Rivka just told her to encourage Daliyah.

What are Mariam’s worries and fears?
How does Rivka tell her to handle those worries and fears?
Where do you get your worth? What talents do you have and how do you invest them?

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine in front of others. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will praise your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Rivka encourages Mariam to let God shine through the ways God uniquely made her. By continuing to follow Jesus and be filled with the Spirit, others can see God in us and come to know Him better.

“All of the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives them to each person, just as He decides. There is one body. But it has many parts. Even though it has many parts, they make up one body” (1 Corinthians 12:12). As Mariam wonders about her duties in life, Rivka continues to tell her what it means to be made unique in God’s eyes. We’re given unique personalities, desires and gifts to invest in the things God puts in our life. As stated in the parable of the talents, God expects us to use what we’ve been given to glorify Him.
