In a beautiful animé style, a prisoner watches as Jesus gets flogged in Pilate’s courtyard. He remembers Jesus teaching and wonders why they’re hurting an innocent man. Horrified, he remembers his own crime.

He’s in an alley with a rich gentleman. Holding him up with a knife, he tries to take a box of coins and belongings. The thief is nervous so when he tries to go after the man, he fumbles. The man fights him with the box. Coins go flying. The thief accidentally stabs the man in the struggle. He claws at the coins and runs.

The crowds in the courtyard scream for Jesus to be crucified. The thief, another man, and Jesus are loaded with the beams for their crosses and march to Golgotha. The thief looks curiously to the crowds who scream that Jesus is innocent.

They arrive and nails are driven through their wrists. Each man is hung on a cross, their feet nailed to a wooden shelf. They hang in agony. Like the crowd, the other thief demands that Jesus save Himself and them. But our thief claims Jesus is the Messiah and asks that Jesus remember him. Jesus promises him they will be in paradise together that day. A dark storm overwhelms the hill and Jesus dies.

The thief passes away with a gasp and sees Jesus in a beautiful place.

What does the thief realize when he looks at himself next to Jesus?

Why doesn’t the thief ask to be freed from the cross?

What do you see as freedom and hope?

Using existing audio loops from the JESUS film, My Last Day visually translates JESUS for the next generation. The story provides an eyewitness account, demonstrates a life transformed because of Christ’s sacrificial death, and imparts knowledge of the resurrection to the viewers.

The thief sees Jesus from his cell and remembers what Jesus taught. He knows Jesus hasn’t done anything wrong. He sees, in Jesus, what it means to be perfect, to be completely right with God.

When the thief looks at his own crimes, he’s horrified to see just how guilty he is. He’s stolen, and killed a man. He sees a big difference between himself and Jesus. But they’re both receiving the same punishment.

As the two thieves and Jesus hang on their crosses, the crowd yells at Jesus to free Himself. Jesus has claimed to be the Son of God. The sign that should proclaim His crime reads: King of the Jews. The Jews expected a king to come and save them from Roman oppression. They thought they were fine and only needed to be freed from a sinful world. The other thief even asks Jesus to free Himself and them, too. But the other thief realizes he needs to be from much more than his punishment on the cross. He sees Jesus for what He truly is: a living sacrifice for the many ways we disobey and walk away from God. He doesn’t ask to be freed from the cross. But he does ask Jesus to remember him in heaven, to represent him, to free him from his guilt before God.

And Jesus promises that He will. He promises that for all of us. He doesn’t promise freedom from earthly things: pain, poverty, wealth, careers, etc. But He does promise a renewed relationship with the Father through His sacrifice on the cross. He promises that we can be free from the guilt of disobeying God.

Moussa complains about his blindness as Dawud prepares for work. Dawud asks permission to share his story with the family when they come to celebrate the baby’s birth. Moussa begrudgingly agrees.

When they’ve all gathered, Dawud apologizes for the trouble at the wedding. He starts by telling them about his mother’s faith in Jesus. Laila had shared her faith with Dawud. But he thought she had been led away from their religion. When he was in prison, he knew many people prayed for him.

He says that when he was in prison, a man appeared to him. The man’s eyes glowed like fire. Everything Dawud had ever done was presented by the man. Dawud wept and worshipped Jesus while the other prisoners slept. He says he’s learned that when man and woman were created, they had a relationship with God. But when they disobeyed, that relationship was broken. So God provided Jesus to die for their sins.

The family grumbles and asks about the prophets and the Scriptures. Ayoub answers that Jesus fulfilled everything the prophets said. Dawud declares that Jesus has saved his life. The family asks why they should believe. Dawud says Jesus was raised from the dead. Rivka’s asked to speak about Mary Magdalene’s experience with the risen Jesus. She tells how Mary saw the empty tomb and spoke with Jesus.

Dawud says that if they believe in the Lord Jesus and are baptized in His name, they can be saved from their sin and shame. Moussa says they’ve said enough.

Outside, Daliyah says she’s been thinking about Jesus and Dawud’s story. She doesn’t understand but she wants to believe. She’s afraid. She’s never actually seen Jesus. Mariam encourages her to ask God what’s true. They pray together.

Rivka and Mariam watch the sunset together. They marvel over everything that’s happened. Mariam declares she knows that God is with them.

What has Dawud learned since his encounter in prison?
What do Mariam and Daliyah talk about while they wash dishes?
How can you share your faith?

Dawud shares his story, along with other things he’s learned since then, with others in the family. When we follow Jesus, we receive the power of the Spirit and the call to share the gospel with others.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem. You will be My witnesses in all Judea and Samaria. And you will be My witnesses from one end of the earth to the other” (Acts 1:8).

“So you must go and makes disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Instead of relying on one person’s opinion, we need to point people back to Jesus and the truth of Scripture. Ayoub uses Scripture when he answers the family doubts about Jesus. “But the servant was pierced because we had sinned. He was crushed because we had done what was evil. He was punished to make us whole again. His wounds have healed us” (Isaiah 53:5).

Dawud rushes in and gathers a few things to go into hiding. Mariam tries to talk to him, but he assures her, she and the family will be okay. He’s doing this for them. He says goodbye to Laila and starts to leave when there’s a knock at the door.

Romans come in as Dawud runs for the rooftops. When Ayoub tells the soldiers Dawud isn’t there, they decide to take him instead. Rivka comes by in time to stay with Sara and Mariam. They run to Laila and pray for Ayoub. Rivka prays for deliverance and wisdom. They thank God for his faithfulness and hold on to their trust in Him.

Later, Mariam asks Rivka how to stay calm in troubled times. Rivka remembers the stories of Mary Magdalene. She says Jesus prayed even more during tough times. She remembers a particular story…

Jesus was on a mountain top praying. A man brought his son to the disciples to be healed. But the disciples couldn’t do it. When Jesus came down from praying, He rebuked the disciples. He said, “This kind only comes out by prayer.” Since He had been praying and fasting all along, He could immediately heal the boy.

Rivka says spending time with God, praying, learning from His Word, seeking His will, and worshipping Him is a way of life. So when life becomes difficult, we’re prepared. Sara asks her if that’s what she does. Rivka says she tries. Spending time in prayer isn’t an obligation; it’s a privilege.

Mariam says that when she prays, she thinks God must think she’s silly. But Rivka assures her that God wants to hear everything. That in the beginning, God walked with Adam and Eve. He enjoyed time with them. Sara asks how they can be sure. Rivka replies that because Jesus was human, He understands everything we go through.

Ayoub comes back and tells them that a centurion ordered his release. Amazed, Mariam says, “God really answers prayer.”

Moments later, Yacoub visits Mariam. He brings news that Dawud’s alive and in hiding. They talk for a moment and awkwardly flirt.

How does Rivka respond to Ayoub’s arrest?
What does Jesus’s example tell you about prayer?
How can you making praying a way of life?

“It was very early in the morning and still dark. Jesus got up and left the house. He went to a place where He could be alone. There He prayed” (Mark 1:35). As Rivka says, Jesus often went away to be by Himself. He set an example for His followers by spending intentional time with His Father on a regular basis.

“Don’t worry about anything. Instead, tell God about everything. Ask and pray. Give thanks to Him. Then God’s peace will watch over your hearts and your minds because you belong to Christ Jesus. God’s peace can never be completely understood” (Philippians 4:6-7). As followers of Jesus, we’re assured God’s peace when we pray. This is how believers endure trials and suffering in life: communication and relationship with the One who made us and reigns sovereign over everything.

Like Rivka says, consistent time with God isn’t an obligation but a privilege. It’s not something to check off a “to-do” list. The action doesn’t make us right with God. But being in God’s presence does bring us closer to Him. You can’t get to know someone if you don’t spend time with him. Our Father prepares us for the things that will happen in this world. And He serves as our rock in hardship and happy witness in good times.
