Ayoub and Moussa wait outside as Sara has her baby. Just as she’s born, Yacoub arrives. The men congratulate each other and rush inside when Noura invites them to. Sara sits with a beautiful girl in her arms.

Rivka, Noura and Mariam are close by. Ayoub holds the baby girl. He asks for Moussa to bless the child. Moussa gladly holds the girl and tells her that the world is hard. He prays that God help her face what life brings, with health, happiness, and a long life. Sara and Ayoub decide to name her Laila.

As they celebrate, there’s a knock at the door. It’s Dawud. Mariam runs out and hugs him tightly. He tells her gladly that he’s been freed. He and Moussa hug and make their way inside. They all sit and listen to Dawud’s story.

When he was arrested, he tried to stay silent during interrogations. But finally, he gave them information. He knew they would kill him now that he had nothing more to offer. One night, Jesus came to him in a dream. He had flowing robes, eyes like fire, and feet like glowing bronze. Dawud fell to his knees in fear and then worship.

Mariam rushes to get Daliyah so she can listen to Dawud’s story.

Dawud tells the other prisoners that he had seen the Lord. When the soldiers came for him, he wasn’t taken to his death. Instead, he was released. His fine had been paid by Rivka’s husband.

Moussa insists Dawud stop. He pleads with him not to fall into another crazy group that might cost him his life. But Dawud and the whole family tell Moussa what it’s like to know Jesus. As followers, their lives are in Jesus’s hands.

Mariam takes Moussa to the courtyard. Daliyah pulls her aside and says she’s going home. She can’t handle all that she’s heard.

What happened to Dawud in prison?
How does everyone react to his story?
What is the story of your faith?

When Dawud shares his story, Moussa gets irritated. He still doesn’t believe what the others believe. He thinks Dawud is choosing to go from one dangerous extremist group to another. But Dawud insists that the sacrifice of Jesus was extreme. And that he very much wants to respond accordingly.

“…If anyone wants to follow Me, he must say no to himself. He must pick up his cross and follow Me. If he wants to save his life, he will lose it. But if he loses his life for Me, he will find it.What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses his soul? Or what can anyone trade for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26).

Dawud enthusiastically shares with his family and wants to continue sharing his story with others. He desperately wants them to know Jesus. When we share our story with others, we should be prayerful, fearless and clear. “Spend a lot of time in prayer. Always be watchful and thankful. Pray for us too. Pray that God will open a door for our message. Then we can preach the mystery of Christ. Because I preached it, I am being held by chains. Pray that I will preach it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders. Make the most of every opportunity. Let the words you speak always be full of grace. Season them with salt. Then you will know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4:2-6).

Moussa accuses Rivka’s husband of telling the Romans where Dawud might be. Rivka says her husband had nothing to do with it. She’s shocked Moussa would speak to her so rudely. Ayoub apologizes. Moussa only gets more upset.

Rivka cries as he leaves. But Noura’s there to see her. She asks what’s happened. Rivka’s so flustered, she drops a stitch in something she’s working on. She tells Noura what Moussa said and that she lost her temper. Moussa blames her for Dawud and the fact that his wife and daughters follow Jesus. Frustrated, she claims she can’t fix it… meaning the stitch. Noura tells her to set it aside.

Noura tells her to forgive him. It’s like the dropped stitch. If it’s not fixed immediately, the hole of bitterness gets bigger and bigger. She urges Rivka not to waste time on anger. She reminds her that Jesus said people would suffer as He suffered for His name. Rivka agrees and asks for forgiveness from God. She asks for blessings on Moussa and forgives him. She decides to speak with Moussa immediately.

Mariam and Yacoub visit Sara and Ayoub to tell them of Dawud. Sara tells Mariam that Laila is much worse. Yacoub tells Ayoub that Dawud has been charged with sedition against Rome. The girls find Laila coughing up blood and hardly able to breathe. Laila tries to talk, but she’s not really able.

Noura and Rivka visit to talk to Moussa. Rivka apologizes. But the girls cry out for help from the family. Laila gasps for breath and stops moving. Rivka checks for breath. But she’s passed away. The family cries around their lost loved one.

How are anger and bitterness like a dropped stitch?
How did Rivka handle her anger?
Are you angry with anyone?

Although Rivka teaches others, we see that she also struggles with sin. No one is perfect. Everyone needs Jesus.

“You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient. Put up with each other. Forgive the things you are holding against one another. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you. And over all of those good things put on love. Love holds them all together perfectly as if they were one. Let the peace that Christ gives rule in your hearts. As parts of one body, you were appointed to live in peace. And be thankful” (Colossians 3:12-15).

“Bless those who hurt you. Bless them, and do not call down curses on them. Be joyful with those who are joyful. Be sad with those who are sad. Agree with each other. Don’t be proud. Be willing to be a friend of people who aren’t considered important. Don’t think that you are better than others. Don’t pay back evil with evil. Be careful to do what everyone thinks is right. If possible, live in peace with everyone. Do that as much as you can. My friends, don’t try to get even. Leave room for God to show His anger. It is written, ‘I am the One who judges people. I will pay them back,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:14-19).

Responding to others as Paul teaches the Colossians and the Romans to respond is a choice. Only in relying on the Spirit can that choice be made. And the choice has to be made despite how others are responding. The other person involved might not apologize. They may continue to persecute you. And they may never actually accept your apology. But their reaction shouldn’t affect our ability to forgive and ask for forgiveness.

Moussa and Laila remember their own wedding day as they prepare for Mariam’s wedding. Mariam sits with the women of her family to prepare. Laila’s relieved to find out that Dawud will be attending the wedding.

The women work to braid Mariam’s hair. Noura shares a story about ten wedding guests who waited for a groom. Five brought extra oil for their lamps. The groom was late. The five that hadn’t brought extra oil, asked the other five for oil. But they couldn’t lend the oil. The five foolish guests tried to go out and find oil. But by the time they got back, the wedding party had left. She encourages Mariam to stay ready for the arrival of God. Yacoub won’t be able to lend his own relationship with Jesus to her. She must cultivate her own.

Rivka remembers the words of the apostle Peter. He said braiding your hair and wearing fine clothes and jewelry doesn’t make you beautiful. But true beauty comes from within.

Sara shares the story about Mary and Martha. She says Jesus came to see the sisters. Martha was preoccupied by the preparations to be made for Jesus. But Mary was happy to sit at the feet of Jesus. Sara admits she’s like Martha. She worries. But she advises Mariam to spend time with God and she’ll find peace.

Laila encourages Mariam to enjoy her time with Yacoub and make the Lord her first priority. Mariam thanks her mother for everything.

Yacoub arrives to take Mariam to the wedding. Dawud’s there too. They march through the streets and enjoy the ceremony… until there’s a knock at the door. Roman soldiers storm in and arrest Dawud. Laila faints, coughing.

What words of wisdom do the women give Mariam?
How do they each reflect and spiritual truth Mariam should remember?
What can you do to make your walk with God your highest priority?

In preparation for marriage, the women in Mariam’s life give her advice that’s actually good for everyone, regardless of status. Noura tells her the wedding guests parable from Matthew 25:1-13. It warns us that we have no idea when Jesus will come for us. We should stay vigilant and in relationship with Him. Those who are prepared won’t be able to lend us their preparedness. So our relationship with Jesus should be a top priority.

Sara shares a similar story when she mentions Mary and Martha from the Bible (Luke 10:38-41). Mary was happy to sit at the feet of Jesus and didn’t worry about worldly expectations. Anyone can be like Mary and find contentment in sitting at the feet of Jesus no matter the circumstance they might find themselves in.

“I know what it’s like to not have what I need. I also know what it’s like to have more than I need. I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens. I am content whether I am well fed or hungry. I am content whether I have more than enough or not enough. I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12-13). Paul speaks about being content in everything because Jesus alone is enough. No matter the situation, this is unchanging. By making that relationship our highest priority, and recognizing it above worldly matters, we can find contentment in everything.
